So do use longer bolts to make sure you have enough threads in the block. In past always take the valley cover off and then bolt the plate down.

No the stock ones are fine. With 6 bolts there is plenty of holding force, I do recommend you tighten them so there is no slop in them.
Here's a pic of the plate I use.
The stock one engage deeper then the ones I had used in the 2nd pic.
