Talking The time has finally come!!!!!

Well after over 2 years on this site(thanks travis) and a love for Chevy trucks that started at like 12 years old. I am finally going to make my dream come true and a LS based truck will be purchased this weekend and sitting in my garage very soon. I am looking basically for a 99-2003 with reasonable milage and a V8 hopefully a 5.3. I am looking for something in the 5-6k price range. Any tips or advice as the search begins?

Make sure the transmission is in decent shape, that's the weakest link in these trucks. I would go for something 2003 and up, since GM cleared up some piston slap and oil consumption issues with those models. Other than that, just get the lowest mileage truck you can afford and have fun. You're price range is right on the money and you should find plenty to choose from

I'm picky....kinda. I always take my scanner and compression tester to look at used vehicles.

Rocker Panels, under doors, rear end clunk, the basics.

Picky? How drunk were you when you bought the last project

Check trans fluid. Check rear end for leaks. They are easy to fix, but chances are if it's leaking, it was driven with low fluid.

Cab corners for rust. Check oil level. If it's low, then it prolly burns a little. Can check tip of exhaust for same problem. All maintenance stuff on these things is pretty easy, so I wouldn't be OVERLY worried about it, but trans/rear end repairs get expensive fast.
blown transmissions are about as useful as 97% of the guys on this forum

Congrats on making your dreams realities. I should be picking my truck up on Saturday. Got the check from the bank today for it, so as long as the dealership doesn't sell it out from under me, I should be golden. Let us know how it goes!
