Thread: Crank position sensor

My 4.8 powered ( or should I say underpowered) GMC is showing a 0335 code after I installed the new transmission. So my main question is where is the crank postion sensor, and how much of a job is it to change.

    Thanks for any help

That seems to be a common problem when changing transmissions. There are a few discussions on this topic recently. Check past posts in the last couple of months. It supposedly has nothing to do with the crank sensor. Maybe you need to have a technician do a crank relearn procedure on the engine.

I have a LR4 on the engine stand, so I snapped some pics for you.

    Got to: http://www.enzoco.com/mike/lr4/

Looking at the passenger side of the engine block,
the sensor is toward the rear. I drew a big red arrow in
the side view shot so there is no question.
I also included a pic of the sensor (removed).
I bet you either pinched or unpluged the wire.
The sensors are pretty sturdy unless you crush the terminals.

Now, if I someone can tell me how (whose tool) to
get my LR4's harmonic ballancer off. -

    Cheers, Mike V

if you are trying to do it while on the ground, have fun!

What I do is run a piece of chain through the opening of the balancer and then I bolt it to the block. Next comes the 500 ft/lb impact gun and chrysler balancer puller and 3/8" rod for a pusher blank down the center of the crankshaft hole. Putting it back on is even more fun since you need a long bolt to draw it back onto the crank snout. You can hammer it back on but be careful not to over-do it. Your crankshaft thrust bearings will be taking the abuse of the hammer.

A trick that Im surprised no one mentions is heating the crank pulley with a torch. Thats how my buddy I have done it all four times we have pulled it. Put alittle grease on the crank then heat the center of the pulley so it expands till its real hot then shove it on the crnak really quick it gets it on there plenty far enough to put the regular size crank pulley bolt on. Its easier that the other ways IMO.

I managed to get the bolt out, but my three-arm puller is having problems
hanging on to the balancer. I have an ATI balancer with a Electromotive
trigger wheel that I want to use. The engine is on a stand. I'm using
C5 vette mounts to put it in an old 46 chev truck. It fits in the truck nice.
I just can't get that %$&@# balancer off.
Test fit pic at the bottom of the page if you scroll all the way down.

If you have a autozone somewhere near you they have a rental Chrysler balancer puller that works better than anything I have ever used before. It grabs the little tabs on the spokes of the balancer and never slips.

As for heating the balancer, I would worry about it being so hot it ruins the new front seal.

Thanks for the replies and the pics. I pulled the starter off and I saw the problem. 2 of the 3 wires going into the sensor hab been pulled from the connector. I went to the salvage and got a new connector and some wiring.

It doesnt go all the way on but niether of our trucks have had a problem with sealing with about 45K miles between the two of use doing that and both of our trucks have had the pulley off twice. Just how I like doing it since its alot easier.
