Why woud there be any such thing as cold/thick oil? Anybody running a turbo (I've got one in my car) should be using only synthetic... and synth flows superbly even when it's well below freezing.
At any rate, I've been using only synthetic in naturally aspirated and forced induction cars for 20 years. No more dino oil except for initial break-ins.
