Figured since we're all gear heads at heart I'd elaborate on what I go to school for and have worked at... here's a picture of a steam turbine from the power plant I've done two internships at. It's a 2200 MW (around 3,000,000 hp for all you number crunchers) coal-fired facility and this steam turbine is a 700 MW unit. Here's what makes your lights come on.
