if you have an alignment tool or an old bellhousing sitting around it helps to align the oil pan. The pan is an integral part of the engine to transmission mount on the aluminum engines. I don't really see how it helps much but GM stresses that it gets mounted parallel with the engine block. I cheat with an old bell housing to line my pan up.
