    a little help and advice

hey guys, i am doing a frame off on a '78 silverado. (2wd shorty) i have been shopping for a 6 liter and found a LQ9 out of a '02 esclade with 100k and all accesories. the recycle yard will bolt a newer 65e trans with low miles all for $2500. will this combo work well together and what ya think about the miles on the motor?

any advice feedback apprieciated very much and welcomed!! thank you, Dennis

I think it will be cool! A 78 SWB is a decent platform and I always like to see those older trucks go through a resto-mod.

An LQ9 with a 65e is a good combo. The only thing i would worry about is the tranny. I don't think I would pay the extra $$$ for that tranny when you can get a core 65e for like $200 and then have it rebuilt with performance parts and it will end up costing close to what you are playing for the one out of the recycle yard. The 100k on the LQ9 would not worry me at all. If it was me--I would go ahead and go through the motor really well to make sure everything is ship shape before you install it.

right on! thanks for the reply!!

well here's the deal he will put any tranny behind it (80e w/ 61k) with the right flex plate etc. but i read that the 80e's gearing is different than the 60 series and i'm not sure what all is involved with the wiring harness, sensors, programming when you go from a 60 to an 80.

also, what exactly do you mean by go through the motor. pull the heads and look at the pistons??

btw, heres a link to my build w/ tons of pics and the progress Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado) - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Ok--now you are talking! an 80e with 61k would be a supremely safe bet over a 65e. If he'll fix you up with the correct flexplate and converter--DO IT!!!! The 80e can handle so much more power and will not break when you start to put some mods on that LQ9--they LOVE mods BTW.

Yes, the gearing is different, but it is for the better honestly. The 80e has a longer 1st gear compared to the 65e, but the ratio difference between the 80e and 65e is waaaaay better. Trust me--I say this and will have 100% backup from everyone on this site...if you can get the option of a late model 80e to bolt up to it, get that over a 65e. Hands down.

Converting the wiring harness is a piece of cake. The 80e requires 2 VSS sensors, so you gotta just splice in and run the front VSS to the PCM and then reconfigure the passenger side circle connector. Click on this link for more info on the wiring.

Going thru the motor is up to you. Remember that taking the heads off equals about $150 in head bolts and head gaskets, so decide wisely. If the motor has a warranty of some sort, then leave the heads and just look at other stuff. Like removing the intake/TB and cleaning it. Remove the valve covers and look at the topside of the heads...did the intake runners/valvetrain looks gummed up or super dirty? If so--pull the heads. If not, freshen up what you want, then bolt it all abck together and off you go. Each situation is different when you buy a used 100k motor...

man, i'm excited!! check out the build if you have time. 18pages worth

Thats A Good Deal Man For A 6 Liter. I Would Trash The 65e Though. U Need A Fully Built 80e Or A Th350 U Wont Break That! A 78 With A 6.0 Would Be Nice. Be Sure To Box The Frame For A Cleaner Look

HOLY CRAP MAN. I just got done reading the thread...FULL frame off resto! Grade 8 bolts, new brakes, dual tanks, restored wheels, etc. Good work! Truck is beautiful! I like the contrast of the black and silver...then the red calipers. Well played.

Ok, as for the fuel system--the 99-03 trucks/Suburbans/Tahoes had the return style fuel system. The 04-07 Classic trucks/Suburbans/Tahoes had the returnless system. Since you are getting an 02 Escalade motor with everything, then you need to get a fuel system from a 04-07 Classic truck.

P.S. Nice Goat. But it needs more mods!!!!!

Jason...why don't you go hide the liquor and strap-on dildos so that when your parents come to visit, you don't get banished from your family.
