Smile 5.3- 71 chevy , late model radiator recovery tank or old school.

Hello folks, I put a new alum/plastic radiator in my 71 chevy c20. the radiator has provisions for the 99 &up recovery tank. I have all the stuff. The radiator man that sold me the radiator said he would use the old method recovery tank. He liked the simple design. Also he said down the road the replacement hoses are costly for the lat model system. Also room is tight in this old truck. 2 other questions. Next ,what are guys doing for an air filter in these old trucks. I have nothing but the motor. Also the egr, Where and how should I remove this? Thanks everyone and also I have a lead on a guy that reprograms the ec in the Stocton Calif area.

I would say go with the old school recovery system. It's simple to mount and it's foolproof. As for the EGR, just remove the tall thing on the intake with the black plastic hose coming off of it and cap the hole in the intake. Post some pics of your truck My dad has a 71 4x4. My favorite body style of all time.

    Smile 5.3- 71

Hello To all . thanks for the imput full throttle and Ausie. The egr I figured out last week. Bought a $23 piece from Gm. After talking to a few folks, Most told me to go with the old school coolant recovery system. Coming out of the 5.3 is 2 smaller outlets down low. A 5/8 and 3/4. Which is the return? I am guessing the 3/4. I might have to take a drive to Elk grove one day to see Full throttles truck. I have a cherry seat for sale. Thanks, Alan

Good to hear you got the egr figured out. I believe the 5/8 is the return to keep a little pressure in the flow with a smaller hose. If your using a factory heater core it will have two different size fittings (5/8 and 3/4) on it already. Just hook them up to their respective sizes. Feel free to stop by any time Alan. Pm me and I can give you my number and address. I don't currently have a lot to show for as I'm still in the restoration process of my truck but I have all my parts for the swap lying around haha.

Rubber expandable freeze plug available from any auto parts store for the intake manifold and a piece of flat steel plate to cover the exhaust manifold outlet.
