I'm stumped. Wheel noise

This noise has me stummped. What is happening is the front left wheel (Driverside) every once in a while makes a noise just like a wheel bearing going out. I can feel it in the steering wheel. When I put the truck in 4WD the tone changes, but dosn't go away. Then without warning the noise goes away and the truck drives like there is nothing wrong. If it were a wheel bearing it would be a constant noise, but it's not. I can't figure this one out. When the wheel is making noise I jerk the steering wheel left and right to see if the tone changes but it doesn't. The only thing that seems to affect it is putting the truck in 4WD. Every once in a while I will get a service 4WD light when I start the truck, but it instantly goes away. Any ideas on this one? Thanks guys! PS the 4WD still works fine.

Did you check the fluid levels, mainly in the front pumpkin?

No I haven't checked the fluid. I bought the truck abouy 6 months ago. I had them check everything, but that dosn't mean they did.

Has anyone had a 4WD hub fail on them?

Ummm....

The light and the noise/vibration are most likely not the same failure. There are common unrelated causes for both in most cases. A scan can help with the warning light cause....the noise sounds most likely to be front diff side bearings, common to fail but more likely to fail in the AWD axle (but the bearings and pumpkin are the same so...)

Check the magnet in the pumpkin for metal and get a TechII on it....or bring it to me.

maby I will just have them look at it when they do the ignition switch. I'm headed out on a 780 mile trip. I hope I make it! LOL! Why does everything fail at once? All in one day I had ignition switch problems, failing bearings or whatever in the drive train, one wiper quit working, (it was a loose nut) the washer fluid motor took a crap.... WTF! LOL!
