Question Monster Transmission in a box

I dont know if anyone has tried these kits. I used one in my old truck with a 700r4 and was happy with it. Looking at a kit for my 2000 now and am wondering if the "SS" kit is worth the extra $300. They have a similar spec list but the bold things are only in the "SS" kit. (And the cheaper kit says it only has Alto brand clutches and steels for 3-4) What do you guys think? Worth $899 vs. $599?

the 5 pinion planetaries pretty much update it to a 65e strength, if they're GM parts. Many of the knockoff planetaries are weaker than a GM 4 pinion setup. looks like a very complete kit other than the having my doubts those are GM planetaries.

I probably will never make a lot of power with the 4.8. I am just worrying about my stock transmission and want something good enough. I bought it used and with a shift kit so I don't know how it should act but I don't like it. It hesitates really bad from 2-3 and occasionally won't shift into overdrive. The 1-2 shift is nice and quick and sometimes chirps the tires, that's the only good thing about it.

Those are good kits and the planets are from GM. My dad has their 700r4 in his camino and it rocks. Definatly a good kit... You could also try Raptor transmission. There u can buy just the part you want or need. Also try Oregon Performance Tranmission.. Good luck. Im running a stock 65e out of a 06 truck with the transgo HD-2 kit and vette second servo and Billet fourth and pinless accumulator.. Works awesome..

Good lookin' stuff. I'm with Greg, the GM list on planet systems is around $200 per set so I question it but if they are it's a sweet deal. Some highlights...

3 molded (bonded) pistons is great, this means it has the 3-4 apply piston.

Sealing rings are good but the solid (uncut) ones won't help without the installers and sizers. The teflon rings (4) on the input shaft housing wear odd in the newer ones, yet another cause of 3-4 failures so I wonder how your supposed to install and size them?

Updated 2-4 servo parts...gotta have them.

Steel plates are probably only for 3-4, maybe for forward set too unless someone can clarify. 3-4 steels are usually the only ones to die (steel wise).

Aftermarket bands are tougher to get pinned but no biggie.

All 700's and 60/65/70's have had a steel front seal retainer since the early 80's but at least there's one in there in case yours gets bent.

The Beast shell and sprags are good investments for sure but I'm not sure why they put pump parts in...if there is an issue with the vanes on your pump the housing and cover are probably junk and you'll need a new or reman unit anyway in many cases.

Chrome pan sounds like a leaker.

I'll need to get one of these soon I imagine.

Funny you say that. I watched the show this weekend to get some pointers! The kit looks good but the guy doing the show does not have a clue what he is doing with a trans. I found it quite funny when he installed the pump bushing with a socket. Best part was he installed it from the converter seal side of the pump. That is a big no no. Reason being is there is a raised area in the pump to help prevent the bushing from walking out into the front seal. I'm guessing he might have had an issue installing the converter because the bushing I'm sure was definitely tight! I love watching these TV shows when they do trans work. I almost always see a mistake made and they put it on national TV!
