Has anyone else swapped out their 5.3L stock cam for a '98-'00 LS1 cam? If so, did you use the stock 5.3L push rods? I'm getting varied answers.

nice project, how hard and how much are the conversion parts to do this to a s10?
The swap took me about 3 months to do - parts collecting, taking my time to do it right the first time. I bought everything new other than the 5.3l - probably have a solid $7-8k into it. You can get away for about half the price if you buy used and go carb'ed. I wanted a reliable daily driver from Spring to Fall, therefore I took my time and bought parts new.

Thanks, it seems more people are saying stick with the stock push rods. I will give it a whirl.
The block is an iron block, its just gray engine paint. I like the looks of the metal color vs the bright chevy orange (old school colors). It would be nice if it was aluminum, it would save me some weight.

Update - crank bolt is snapped off in the crankshaft. I bought a longer bolt 16mmx2.0x120mm and used that to put the balancer on. I then used the old crank bolt to press the balancer on the rest of the way as they instructed on several websites. As I was backing the old bolt out of the crank, it got pretty hard to loosen - not sure if it stretched too much or not. I did not use an air impact on removal or installation. I used a big breaker bar. Now, comparing to the new crank shaft bolt, it looks like just the tip snapped off, roughly 1/4" or about 2-3 threads.
The sad part is that everything was going great tonight. I removed the old cam, installed the new cam, put the push rods back in and buttoned that up. I got the timing cover on and then it was time for the balancer install. As soon as it snapped, I was like "are you kidding me???" I wonder if I can center punch it and drill it out? Any recommendations?![]()
