    Talking SS Turbo build

All right guys i figure its time to start my turbo build. Now here is whats going on the GT-K1000 turbo is mine but not the intake http://www.ls1truck.com/forums/power...ke-starts.html Ok to start off with i pulled the 408 out and its staying out and for a while, i dont think the rings seated right and i wantt to change some stuff out on it so i am doing this "Quik Style" if you will. Thats right just pick up a 4.8 with 80,000 miles. The plan is to do the complete turbo setup, fuel system (new tank where spare tire goes), and electrical. Now the 4.8 i want to rebuild plan is to send it to near by shop to get balanced and have the pistons coated. Also im sending my LQ9 heads off to get worked over with new valves and a good port and polish. Im also going to get fast 92mm intake and have that PandP as well. As far as Cam set up and a few other odds and ends havent decided yet but with my understanding this will be about a 8.4:1 compression and hoping low 20psi on the 4.8 before i swap back to the 408 this is also saving me on my wallet so i dont have to buy a 80e right away...i hope

and current mode of trans port lol

who built the 408? I had a lot of bad luck with my 1st two builds because somebody in Houston kept clocking all the ring gaps to the outside.bottom (closest to the exhaust port) of the block, amatuers. I finally had the owner of the shop assemble the block so that everything was right. I spoke at length to him about the fact that his engine assemblers were not very well trained and he listened. When I got it back it was perfect and no more oil consumption issues, they learned how to gap the rings properly and its been getting abused for going on three years now.

I built it! lol but that was my frist ring gap really the 2 other motors or so ive built were pre gaped and this was at wyotech and the ring file/grinder sucked plus i think that it has bad oil consumption also because it had no windage tray. where did you have that problem at?

A race engine shop there in Houston. He made good on it so I won't bash him. If the rings aren't clocked correctly on the pistons you'll never quit burning oil.

nice, brings a tear to my eyes to see another 4.8 getting tortured soon.

run the stock 6.0 MLS gasket on the 4.8 for use with your 317s. i wouldnt waste time tearing apart the 4.8. in its current state its fine, just toss in some ARP rod bolts. if you want to push over 18psi i would step up to ARP mains. Also i ran a fast90 for awhile and swapped it for my ls2. Honestly if you didnt buy the Fast yet spend money elsewhere and run a Ls2 intake. They can be had very cheap and work well with boost. since any restriction they might have is over come with pressure. Look into the new FRPP 80lb injectors, i plan to step up injector size soon and thinking of getting these. these will allow you to run E85 at the levels your wanting to push the motor. At 18psi i have seen 111% duty cycle on my 60s. with using a 4.8 and large turbo youll have spin that mofo some rpms. my cut off is 7600 and i shift around 7000-7200. my cam is 230/236. i would find a cam similar to that so you can later toss it in your 408. Take a look at LS1speed aka speedINc turbo grinds. they have a 230/230 cam which i believe would work well for ya.

if you need a good solid base tune let me know ill send you my tune so you can fire yours and run it for awhile. my tune has been safe with no meth up to 15psi and ive ran 18psi with WW fluid. the tune is OLSD which means not currently using the narrowbands

Ok! thanks for that info! i planed on using the main and head studs from the 408 on the 4.8 i would just need to get rod bolts installed. The reason i was thinking about having it balanced/pistons coated/ and rebuilt was i really would like to see how far one of these would go, I planed on putting it in a very striped down rcsb at some point after it came out of the SS(with new turbo setup) but i guess if i blow it up in the ss i can just rebuild it or something. Im also not sure when my hot parts will be done so there is no rush on getting motor ready.
EDIT: Also i was wondering about what timing chain to use i was thinking about just a ls2 chain or some type of single roller but didnt know if it would hold 7500 rpm's. And im looking at upgrading my valves in my heads while there getting P&P (its free) so im open to options on them.

i have a rollmaster doubleroller. ive ran one of these chains in my 6.0,6.7 and now 4.8. I plan to run one in the camaro's motor along with the replacement motor for the silverado as well. Dont sweat rebuilding it right now, just run it as is.

depending on what year your 408 is and what year 4.8 it is the head studs might now work since in 04 they swapped to teh shorther head bolts where as previous years had different lenght bolts.

yeah the 408 is a 03 and the 4.8 is a 04 i forgot about all that business. Ill have to think about what i want, i know that the sotckers are good but if i do get this thing up past 20 it might not be a bad idea to get studs. And ive looked at the roll master and it looks just like my slp in the 408. what oil pump are you running because i had major clearance problems with that timing chain and pump set up. Also started to look at there cams 1 problem i see is that there turbo cams are like 112-114 lsa but there blower cams are 114 or 117 and i thought you wanted 115-118 for boost?
    blower cam- SC3 226 234 .598 .599 117
    turbo cam- TU2 236 236 .587 .587 112.5

i run a ported 6.0 pump. its the same thing as a ls6 pump. i ported it myself. i been running these pumps since my 6.0. never once had issues and always had above typical oil pressure. with a stock pump you have no clearance issues.

my cam is 115 +2.. you want a cam with no overlap idealy, i still like the results ive seen with the TU2. you couldl ook into EPP blower cam ppl have made large numbers with it. also look into the GT-7 i thin it is. its a LPE cam, which seems to like boost as well

i still have stock head bolts, smaller motors can handle little more then larger counterparts

Ive looked at the LPE GT-7 and GT2-3 the problem i have with the 7 is the lift is low 554/546 and the gt2-3 the duration is low at only 207/220 i will probably end up going with the TU2 i was just concerned about that lsa
