We're talking about the front slip yoke at the trans....or at least I was. The best lube is the slimey green crap you put in CV joints but high temp synth bearing grease works as well. Polsih the yoke with emery cloth and lube the splines inside the front yoke.
All that is for the honking/clunking during starts and stops.
