    engine knock

i'm new here and i''m wondering if somebody can help me with an issue i'm having with my '01 5.3 silverado. the wrist pins that hold the connecting rods to the pistons are loose, causing it to knock for about two mins at startup and then it goes away, problem is it's not under warranty anymore and i really don''t want to sell the truck as it's a great looking ride. does anyone know if it''s repairable and if so a good estimate of how much it would cost, i'm not expecting it to be cheap as you have to take the engine out etc but i'm also thinking about dropping a new cam in it when it is taken out if it is repairable...i posted this on another truck forum but not a lot of answers helped out so....anybody have any experience with this?

    Welcome

    Hello black2k1z71,

Are you sure it is the wrist pins? There is a normal cold knock due to loose pistons with a short skirt. There is no problem with that knock-noise.
Loose wrist pins should knock under lugging conditions even when warmed up. Need more information. How long have you had the truck? When did this start? how loud is it?

Did you know that SHORT SKIRTS can cause trouble?

i bought it in february after my 1999 sierra was stolen and wrecked. it started about two months after i bought it and its louder when its cold out but it still only makes the noise for a couple minutes after start-up and then it goes away, usually for the entire day. man...sometimes those short skirts do lead to loud, embarrassing mornings, ha.

Get used to the noise. The Gen3s are infamous for the piston slap sounds in the earlier engines.

Probably not the wrist pins. These have two noises that are tough to get rid of but cause no harm. The deeper noise is the pistons rocking in the bores due to short skirts. The higher pitched noise is carbon build up on the piston tops. Run some top engine cleaner through it SAFELY (or get help if you're not well versed in this procedure) and the carbon noise will go away for a while before eventually returning.

Morning Did you switch oil-weights?- when the noise started. Many use Moble1--try it. Maybe it is carbon build up [ some have said it will make it louder ]--how many miles on the motor? I don't think it is the wrist pins. But it would be a good excuse to get a 6.0
I warm up or drive real easy untill my little knocker gets quiet. I do not jump right on her, short skirts and all.

i switched it over to mobil1 10w-30 synthetic oil a week after i bought it. it had just under 120xxx on it when i bought it and now i'm only around 128xxx thanks to having a motorcycle to ride all summer. i'll just have to hit the autostart when i'm eating breakfast from now on i guess. i always try and ease into it with the short skirt on, it's better for her and gets me where i need to be.

A short skirt and a motorcycle would be nice.
