    Oil Pump Clearance

Does the oil pan need to be lowered on an LQ-4 in order to remove the oil pump?

Is there enough clearance to remove/replace the pick-up tube with the pan in place?

Some do it buy holding the 10mm tube bolt with mechanic's wire. Never tried it myself.

yes and no. Gotta drop the pan out if you're taking the old tube out and replacing it with a new one. Good thing is the NBS trucks have a bolt in crossmember you can remove and then drop the pan.

So, does this imply that if I'm just removing the oil pump to replace the timing chain & gears, I won't have to lower the pan?

You should drop the pan for that for sure. If you could do it without the pan dropped you'd already know you could.

Could I get a translation on what this means?

It means try it, if it works then you saved a bunch of time. If it doesn't, you'll know to pull the pan. I guess you're trying to get a parts list together? Maybe the parts store will take back an unopened package.

First you say I need to drop the pan for sure. Then you say you don't know. Which is it?

Or, better yet, what does the GM service procedure specify for timing chain replacement?

It says to pull the pan. That doesn't mean you have to.

Your question is very vague because we don't know if you're replacing the oil pump, the timing chain, the timing gear, or the pick up tube. It has also changed from the 1st to the last post. When you quote someone's changing answer, make sure the changing question is quoted too.

If you are replacing (not just unbolting from the oil pump) the tube, the pan has to come off for sure like Red said.

If you're replacing the chain only, you can probably work it out around the pump IF you can get the pick up unbolted from the pump without dropping the bolt into the pan or messing up the pick up.

If you can do that, you can probably get the pump off too. Which means you could then pull the gear if that's what you're after.

    You've misinterpreted what I wrote.

    To clarify:
To remove/replace the pick-up tube means to remove it from the oil pump body and then replace it when re-installing the pump.

Can this be done w/o lowering the pan?

Since the tube needs to be removed from the oil pump before the pump can be taken off, this is the only question I'm asking.
