There was for my 2.0 hyundai. When my TC stripped off its splines, the one i ordered from O-reallys was too far from the starter to start. Had to get the starter from a standard hyundai, it reached the additional 3/4 inch and starts the beast every time!

I guess my question is do i match the engine, or transmission for starter selection?

match it to the flywheel you're using. If an fbody manual flywheel, get a manual fbody starter if there is a different starter for the auto vs. manual transmission.
