Odd, Transgo doesn't suggest losing any check balls with their kits. Opening a few holes larger in the plates, Yes, but losing balls, No. They specifically show exactly where to put the balls back in with their HD kit.
Welll that's true, they say keep them all.

The one in the input shaft will result in a slightly firmer TCC lockup. One I will toss effects flow and capacity to the 3-4 pack...it will alleviate any potential leaks in the hyd circiut. Another causes a delay between R and D. One causes delayed engagement of the overrun clutches in a kickdown.
