I have G80 in my truck right now and I want to get rid of it and install an open carrier. I was wondering if I could just install the open carrier without having to shim and all that stuff. I'd be using my same gears.

1982 Silverado - just an old truck motor I had sitting around the house.
you will have to shim it side to side to get your gear backlash but that will be all. That's the simplest swap out you can do in these 8.5" rears.

was wrong with the G80? did it die on you...
i got luck when i swapped in my G80 and did not have to shim side to side or the depth...

Mine works fine when it wants to, but I'm running slicks and I know that G80 is gonna embarrass me oneday at the track.

when you break it everyone at the track is going to be pissed at you. It takes a lot to clean up gear oil.

Yeah, that's another reason why I want to get rid of it too. They were laughing at me when it wouldn't lock up and I was doing one-wheel burnouts before each run.

Why get an open carrier? IMHO--get a Detriot Truetrac for it. I would be surprised if you break that thing...

I was planning to put a spool in the open carrier. I rarely drive the truck lately and I know better than to drive in the rain. It's gonna be a track-only truck.

Yeah, I'm seriously considering that myself. No more worries about diffs going bad, just bald tires and busted axles.I think you need c-clip eliminators to go with a spool, though.
