    4L80E diagnostic

Okay, bought a used 80e today to replace my old one. Thought I'd get you guys input and opinions. I bought this unit at a salvage yard. The dude at the place told me its a 2003 and had 23,000 miles on it when pulled. First thing that happens is they bring me out about a 91 model. Next I tell the guy that he's trying to pull a fast one on me and I want my money back. He says it was an honest mistake and that the part puller guys just grabbed the wrong one so he says he'll go make sure they get the right one. They bring the correct style unit out to me and the ID tag is missing. It was the correct style so I accepted it. On the way home I stopped at the carwash and cleaned it up. On the end of the torque converter the time/date stamp says it was manufactured 01-18-01. This has me concerned that he may have pulled a fast one on me. The fluid is medium dark. I pulled the pan and the magnet had magnetic particles completely around it but no thicker than 1/16". There was fiber material very lightly coating the pan, nothing more than I have ever seen on a good transmission. What do you guys think I should do, use it or return it? They do have a 90 day warranty if I have it installed by an ASE certified mechanic. Anyone know one of those local? Billy, are your or Dustin ASE certified? Interject your opinions guys!

even if its fine, i would still take it back an get my money. i would rather spend my money some place else then be lied to. just like the guy who sold me my first 6.0 he lied an was going to give me the motor for 900 bux but i said nope an had him take it back an made him eat shipping.

thats just how i am, i can't stand it when people lie to me about parts

    Thumbs up

Light filings are normal, but the very dark fluid would lead me to believe it was not serviced on a regular basis/potentially abused (way too heavy towing). Will you know, nope.

I'd return it and find another. Luckily here in DFW we have choices A-plenty for parts. I know of a few places in Fort Worth and Kennedale if you need help, just PM or call me.

ya know the more i read this thread red.lol ,i guess if u have potential too get parts that are from a reputable j/y i know that sounds weird but ,we have some real top notch j/y up here a1 people ,honest .idk what kinda people u have but any way ,i guess id take it back and find someone that you know is going too give you a real 2003 plus tranny cause of course it has better chance of abuse and mileage .so the heck with what i tried saying earlier ,get another 1.they were full of **** so y trust youre getting anything good from them.i simpithise with u ive been in the tranny perdicimate many times and didnt know what to do .its easy said[ buy a finish line] but not everyones budget allows for that or schedule so u have 2 sacrifice and make the best of the situation.ive had 2 make many sacrifices due 2 same reason, its not about money with me i just cant have my truck down its my dd and i dont like driving the tow ,or construction vehicles i have .its my baby.lol sounds stupid but true.so in turn i have sacrificed doing 6 tranny jobs and alot of money.i will b in youre shoes again even though im doing a nother tranny as we speak because mine is week.lol.this time im having my builder use all the finish line parts i can ,bcause i know if this 1 ****s the bed im going 80e.in closing greg after all the bla bla ,take it back, youre mind will be at ease if u go somewere else .

The dark fluid is my concern as well. As you know a well cared for trannie with 23K should have nice clean cherry red fluid.

Greg, I would be afraid of it too. That thing might have been in a tow truckand you know they get abused.
Are you sure you can get your money back? Junk Yards arent usually worried about customer service.

They are going to find me a comparable unit. I talked to the owner today and he's looking for one right now. I don't mind the $1000 out of pocket but it is going to be for the transmission I paid for, not for one I was forced to settle for.
