I was just wondering if anyone else has heard that a 160* thermostat will accually give you worse gas millage(unburned fuel do to low temps) an no HP gains. Now I know Allen could probly tune the truck to run better with the 160*stat. but anyone know the real deal?

I dont know about gas miileage but if you run a lower temp, your computer will automatically advance the timing, hense more power.

not exactly sure but if the engine doesn't get up to the predefined temp, the PCM will not go into closed loop operation and your engine will not pass a sniffer test since it will be running richer than it should be.

Speaking of, where is the thermostat ? Is it like my lt1 TA at the water pump? I just got this 5.3L truck and haven't looked yet. And my TA at 160 goes into
closed loop all the times, not an issue.

yeah it is on the water pump, but your truck with a 160 t stat will be running around 180-185 actual temp, so there will be no problem staying in open loop, it will go into closed loop.

I've just heard stories that stock engines with minor tuning dont need 160, 180 is the way to go. 160 is to cold and the sleeves dont expand enough and the pistons grind the rings against them causing more wear.

but then again. theres two stories for every issue..

Has anyone heard when they are going to be releasing the '04 thermostat's? I've heard that Hypertech is working on one, but not sure if someone else has released one yet.

The closed loop temp is around 135 degrees, so a 160 will be just fine.
There is a table in the pcm that references timing and temp. That's why your truck feel perky in the cold weather.

I called hypertech a few weeks ago, so ya, they are working on it.

    later,
