There are two kits, be sure you buy the one without the temperture bypass valve, its much cheaper.

Is that the one called a Tru Cool or something like that? I remember seeing one that was suppose to bypass the cooler during colder weather so the tranny warmed up quicker, I assume that's what you're talking about.

yes, thats the one. Unless you live in Alaska or the Canadian border I cant see a need for the valve.

here is what they say on their site.
"If you are in the Northern part of the country where you have extended periods of freezing cold weather, and you are installing a large cooler, we suggest the "Tru-Cool" self-regulating coolers. This will help warm your transmission up to operating temp. faster in the cold winter months.
If you are in the South there is not as much need for this feature with warmer winters, unless you are adding a very large cooler or bypassing the transmission cooler in the radiator."
This where I bought mine. Tru-Cool Heavy Duty transmission cooler: Bulkpart transmission parts #4739
One thing I learned when I installed mine, do not use the worm clamps they send in the kit. I had one fail on me and wiped out my trans.
Go to your auto parts store and get some fuel injection clamps.

I live in Eastern Idaho an work in the public schools. I was out all last week due to snow and wind making the county roads unsafe for the school buses. If it's not too spendy the Tru-Cool may not be a bad idea although I've never had a vehicle with one yet so I guess I should save the coin

So what's the consensus on tranny cooler size? I don't remember who but somebody said at least a 24K. A couple other guys say the 40K is needed. This ride will for the most part be the family ride. It will pull a 23' camping trailier maybe a half dozen times in the summer. The 40K cooler is 50 bucks more than a 28K cooler. If I do the shift kit too the 28K cooler is more within my budget. Would it be an improvement over stock or a waste of time and money? If I go with the 40K cooler I probably wouldn't be able to do the shift kit. Comments?

Here's where I'm at. I won't be making the buy for a while and prices might change a little but overall I imagine they'll still be in this ball park. Like everyone else, I'm trying to get the most bang for my buck. Here are a two different ways I could go. Getting the spendier shift kit and cooler will be about 50 bucks more than these options. May not sound like much but it would push me beyond my tranny budget.

    Combo 1
NEW TRU-COOL TRANSMISSION COOLER 28,000 GVW TOW TOWING
    US $74.99
eBay Motors: NEW TRU-COOL TRANSMISSION COOLER 28,000 GVW TOW TOWING (item 7997035170 end time Feb-20-08 18:00:00 PST)

    TRANSGO 4L60E HD2 SHIFT KIT 93-UP TRANSMISSION LS1 LT1
    US $89.99
    eBay Motors: TRANSGO 4L60E HD2 SHIFT KIT 93-UP TRANSMISSION LS1 LT1 (item 190195592106 end time Feb-08-08 13:59:27 PST)

    Equals $165

    Combo 2
TRANSMISSION COOLER HD 40,000 GVW TOW TOWING TRU-COOL
    US $124.99
eBay Motors: TRANSMISSION COOLER HD 40,000 GVW TOW TOWING TRU-COOL (item 7999761205 end time Feb-06-08 16:00:00 PST)

TRANSGO 4L60E 4L60-E SHIFT KIT ESCALADE DENALI YUKON H2
    US $39.99
eBay Motors: TRANSGO 4L60E 4L60-E SHIFT KIT ESCALADE DENALI YUKON H2 (item 4594783360 end time Feb-18-08 19:35:12 PST)

    Equals $165

Same basic price, one combo has a better shift kit the other a better cooler.

And what about this 26K for only 33 bucks.
eBay Motors: Hayden 26,000 GVW Transmission Cooler 1405 New (item 170166535675 end time Mar-04-08 21:44:44 PST)

    Feedback is welcome.

After the shift kit iinstall, just drive it as before and the transmission will be pretty much as it was before. Tell your installer that you do not want hard shifts and they'll be sure to fix it so it shifts normally. You should also buy a new valve body seperater plate to go with the shift kit so that if the old one is worn the new one will fix the wear. Some guys like to replace the steel check balls with newer style plastic balls. I prefer the steel myself.
So how high are we talkin' here? The roads finally cleared enough that I felt I could goose it a little. I got it up to 4500 and it was still in first. The tach only goes to 6K with no red line indicated. I couldn't push it more, I was in town and didn't want to pass one of the towns finest while I was speeding down a school zone.

Depends on where your PCM is programmed for. Could be 5800 or 6200 RPM. You're not going to hurt it if you bounce it off the rev limiter, its there for a reason but it will shift first.
