Ok guys, I posted elsewhere but as this site has a top of swppers here, I thought I might get even more info from you guys.

OK, here is the dilemma. I am thinking two routes for the future...ok three, but the third is a little more of a stretch. I'm gonna guestimate high on all my $ values.

The first two are 6.0 drop in ideas. The debate is doing a shortblock or longblock. Regardless of either, I plan on adding to the engine:
    - TOG Headers - $900
    - Some cam, either the tried and true 212/218.522/529 114, or the higher lift version 212/218 .558.563 114. - $400
    - Patriot heads - Haven't heard many people doing this, is there a reason? - $1200
    - Exhaust

    1) 6.0 Short block - $800??
I would then have to get my hands on:
    - Intake - no clue??
    - Springs, lifters, rods - ??
    - Oil pan - ??

    2) 6.0 Long Block - $2000
It would just be swapping out parts and reselling the others, right?

    3) With all this turbo talk that came into my head for the 4.8. I basically want to be throwing 350's to the ground.

I have considered the 6.0 vs the LS1 5.7 for pure simplicity.

    Thanks guys,
    Andrew

First question for you, why do you think the 6.0 will be simpler than the 5.7 LS1? They are the same block dimensionally and have interchangable parts. The only difference is cast iron vs. 65-85 lbs lighter aluminum. If you want to be showing competitors the tail lights, reducing weight of the truck helps the horsepower to weight ratio. The LS1 HP was always under rated by GM to make insurance affordable for the car's owners. I have heard of many people having their stock t/a and camaro put on the dyno and get a corrected hp of over 360.

Simpler primarily because all there is to do is have the PCM tweaked. NO harness splicing and all that stuff to go along with it. It would be nice to do an LS1 (I saw a truck with an old school SS emblem and "supercharged" and was drooling extensively) but this is my daily driver and the downtime to get the harness and all the wiring ready I think would be out of my leauge. The 6.0 is just a simple drop. Now if any of you want to come on up to NY, well then maybe my tune will change, until then, the simpler the better is my thought. Point me in the right direction if you have another opinion.

Just use the 5.7L with your truck harness, PCM, intake, and accessories, that is what Farmtruc, Hayhauler and many others have. It all bolts to the LS1 5.7L longblock.

Really, I thought there was some harness messaging that needed to be done to get to that running point. The 6.0 is a straight drop in, you are saying that, aside from the accesories, the others are just a plug in and play? ie Keep my computer and "plug" my harness into the LS1?

If you swap all you truck parts (intake, exhaust, wiring, oil pan, accessories, ect) on to 5.7L it will work just fine. You will need some tuning to take advantage of the new power, but it will run on the PCM and the tuning you have now. Some time you might want to get bigger injectors too.

Swap out the long block and keep your exhaust, intake, water pump, accessories, crankshaft pulley and most likely the oil pan/windage tray/oil pickup tube. That's about it. Bolt your goodies onto the LS1 engine and you got all the power of the LS1 plus you just put your truck on an iron free diet.
