The lady at GM didnt know what the hell she was talking about, she pretty much just told all I could do was get a new one! I even asked her if she knew what a stepper motor was, but she didnt know. Gm really pissed me off about this one.
How many miles do you have on the truck? Ask to talk to the gm service rep for that dealer. They have the power to "goodwill" a repair if it isnt too far out of warranty. Usually about 60k. Either way, they should at least make an effort. Mine did the same thing and I was out of warranty and I got it goodwilled.

I have a similar problem with mine, the fuel gauge reads whatever the heck it feels like. I practically have to guess what I got in there. Except mine is a 00 silverado with 115k on it.

I think the fuel guage stepper motor is the same as the speedo. It was real cheap...12 bucks to get a new one from ebay. If nothing else, its worth a try. Here's the link...

eBay Motors: GM Chevy Silverado Tahoe Cluster Stepper Motor 03 04 05 (item 250195309853 end time Dec-10-07 16:05:45 PST)

I think it will work for your 00 model truck
