Does this sound like rod knock? Please help.
Hey all, after a few gmfs members recommended me to this site I thought I'd post up the problem with my TBI 350 engine (95 z71). I know this is a ls1 forum but from what I understand most of you really know your stuff, so any input is GREATLY appreciated.
Anyways this is an engine I recently picked up took apart and examined. All the internals of the engine looked damn near new. After putting all new gaskets and a few other items into the engine we put it in and cranked it up. At first, there was no noise and everything seemed fine. My first problem was that the tranny wasn't shifting, after realizing my tranny fluid was damn near empty I put some in and all was well...Then I began to get this ticking noise that was very loud at startup and would decrease as it warmed. My buddy said that the bell housing bolts were still loose and we assumed the flywheel was bad. I took it up to my local transmission shop and they said the flywheel was broken right at the crank. So after a new flywheel and brake booster, the main noise that was so loud at startup has gone away and now I have this non-rhythmic knock. When the engine first starts (cold) and oil pressure is well above 60 there is no knocking. Once my oil pressure settles to about 40 the knock begins and is very non-rhythmic. Also, when the truck is put in park the knock subsides a good bit, but when I put it in drive it gets louder. Also, it quits knocking as I accelerate. It does get loud from about 900-2,200 rpms but anything above that, nothing. It is mainly loud when braking and sitting with it in drive. What does this sound like to you? I would love for it to be a bad torque converter or anything simple. I'm terrified of the idea of starting back at square one. Please help.
