You slide the dowels into the lifter ports behind the timing cover. While sliding them in, spin the cam to push them up because you might have some that stay up, and others that fall back down quickly. Once the dowels are all the way in ( measure length by placing the dowel next to the cam thats going in... make the rod about 4-6 inches longer.) you can take the camshaft out without the lifters falling out.
