you should have tried to used the stock shim on the pinion. The two bearing side shims are were the play counts... I'm probably way off but thats how mine was. We actually just moved the left shim to right and vice/versa and it was perfect. .006-.012 is what I was told the BL should be. A lot of gears come pre worn from the machinist too.
