Now i don't know ls1 as good as some of you other guys but i do know that 6.0l get bad mileage in trucks cause the trucks come with 4.10s. i know a guy personally that has an 8.1l big block and gets 3 mpg better mileage in an idetical truck but the big block has 3.73s and he averages around 15mpg wearas his old truck averaged 12 and he also hauls a skidsteer everyday that weighs 15000 lbs. Now maybe its just the trucks and maybe the 6.0l corvettes and gtos are different i don't really know. But being from ND state, 95 % of the people i know own alteast 3 trucks and 75% of them own 6.0l 3/4 ton chevys and i even own a 6.0l but in a denali truck and i get 17mpg on the highway all the time if i go 70 mph while they make 10 to 12 but it also has different gearing because its not really meant to pull that much stuff and is AWD.
I do know many others that have experienced horrible mileage with the 6.0l but i'm a pretty strong believer its because of the gears so my advice would be just make sure you got the right gears and i'm sure you'll be fine. i'm mean the new corvettes make 400hp and get 27mpg, now thats also a corvette but i'm sure either one will suit your need. and from what i've seen the 6.0l can be a little cheaper and easier to find but thats hear in ND state where trucks are everywhere. but good luck in your desision. i will be making the same one soon hopefully.

I'm confused.... I thought that LS1 was the same as Gen III and that a 6.0 is a LS1/Gen III engine.

I don't mean to be a picky asshole or be correcting anybody... I'm just tryin to get the titles right in my foggy ole brain. They didn't have all this Lt/LS stuff back in the day... it was a 283 or a 327 or a 409 or whatever. Simple, no markting BS. So..... A 5.3 or 6.0, etc, is a Gen III or LS I engine right? A 350 is an LT 1 ..... right???? Thanks for straighting me out. Jim

I thought an LS1 was specifically the all aluminum GenIII 5.7 liter motor that came in F-bodies and vettes and the 4.8,5.3, and 6.0 were just based on the LS1 design still being an LS motor just not an LS1.

The first, very early prototypes of the all-new, Gen III ran on the dynos at GM Powertrain sometime in the early spring of 1993. In-vehicle testing began at the GM Milford Proving Ground in the first week in May of 1993 with the "Chevrolet Engineering and Research Vehicle IV-A" (CERV4a) powered by a prototype, of 5.0 liters and having an iron block and aluminum heads. Eight months later a second car, the CERV4b fitted with a 5.7L iron block/aluminum head Gen III, was added to the test program.

motoxlifer, this engine was to originally be put in low-volume, 1996 truck applications.

I would say all Gen III motors are LS1's

OK not to argue but; those are just proyotype testing engines. Just because they tested with iron blocks doesn't mean that the 4.8,5.3,&6.0 are LS1's. They are in the LS family but not an LS1. Kinda like an LS1 isn't an LS6 or an LS2. Those engines are very similar but given different names. I have never seen GM advertise there trucks as having LS1's. I guess it's kinda like a square is a rectangle but a rectangle isn't a square.

Ok, Let's just say they are all LS based engines. I can relate to what you're saying as far as LSX, LS1, LS2, LS6, LS7, LS9 etc.....They are all based on the LS1 engine.

What would you consider this LS based motor? It's just a little 4.8 LOL
