well guys, your prob tired of these trans post so heres my last one for a while, ive been reasearching and want your opinion, 1 called dave at ROCK ON, very nice guy , helpful, can buy his parts kit (700&#036 and use it to build mine but still pay for labor or buy a complete trans from him for about 1895 and a core charge,2 local guy can get the same parts and wants 2600$ for build and installation incluing a 2400 stall. 3 called chuck at FLT and told me 2047$ for a level 4 with billet outputshaft, or 2252$ for the level 5, but 400$ for core charge and then converter is extra. my stock trans is fine w/30,000 miles. which way should i go? , if i do go for a new trans should i just find a junk core to send so i can keep or sell my stock one? so buy one or build mine? i want the most for the best value. thanks for the help.

Hmmmm.... that's a tough decision. I'm glad it's you having to choose instead of me!

If you want to keep your stocker you should be able to get a salvage yard core for $25-$50. Any more than that I'd walk.

If you have a local builder that you trust, I'd go with them. Local support is priceless.

You can usually pic up a core tranny in the 25-100 dollar range. Unless you dont care what the core is like you can walk in a yard and tell them what you want and get it for next to nothing. I picked up a newly rebuilt 4l60 out of a wrecked burban for 75 bucks. Keep your old one. If nothing else if for some reason you have to pull your new one you can slap your old one to get you around.

or sell it to offset the cost of the new one

True. I guess I am just on the cautious side. Build more than needed at the time and have a back up. Just me.

thanks again for the input, ill think about it for a week or two, with the 15% off at flp its hard not to order that level 5 but then i still have a core charge, and shipping both ways and a new converter to buy, its hard to spend the money when my stock tranny is working fine,im a fan of preventative maintainance but this is a very expensive measure!
