YEAH....I am thinking about doing that 80E swap now with a rebuilt 4L80, and a true track.....the only thing that I am unsure about is what people who have the 80 swaps did for a driveshaft....did they buy a 2500 shaft and chop it with a new end for the stock rear end? That kinda seems like the cheep-o way to do it....I saw some drive shafts for like $200 on the net.....I'll find out where my dad went for his drag car and truck driveshafts to have it chopped and welded up with the right end.....what do you guys think? I was worried that the truck was just gonna need a TON of extra power to overcome the 80E apposed to the 65/70 trans....how much of a loss in 60ft times did people see with that first gear in the 80E? Anyone on here remember if the truck launched "gutless" after the 80 was put in?
The stock driveshaft can be reused--it just needs a 1350 yoke instead of the 1310 yoke it has now. Just have a new yoke welded on to the new correct length. A local driveshaft shop should be able to cut, weld new yoke, and balance for about $90.
The trucks who run 80e trannys usually don't have to worry about it being 'gutless' at launch. No need to worry about it man. I know what you are thinking and it won't be an issue. Just go ahead and do the 80e. There are several people who are on here who have done the swap and can help you every step of the way.

cool....thanks man....that was the info that I needed to hear...I keep thinking the swap was going to just tear the b*lls off of the truck until I get the blower....that and the drive shaft situation...I keep seeing them break and it makes me wonder if while I HAVE the cash that I should just put a 14 bolt in the truck along with a better driveshaft....like just get one from a junk yard out of a suburban or a 1500HD (I THINK those had 80's in them...I cant remember)......that way the 1350 yoke will be on the slip end.....and I dunno if a 14 bolt out of an SSS truck or a VHO COMES with the 1350 yoke already on it....just trying to spend cash ONCE....I dont think the brackets for my cal-tracs will work with a 14 bolt because of the larger diameter axle tube....I can spend the extra cash to put together a set-up that hooks up with drag radials, and is reliable......
I used the caltracs that were originally for my 10 bolt on my truck when I converted to 14 bolt, no issue.![]()

SWEET....I haven't held the brackets from my kit up to a 14 bolt yet....THANKS for the info....I'm kinda in the middle of NOWHERE in California so there REALLY isn't anyone out here that does anything other than dropping a truck on some wheels....the site and the net is really the only place where I can get LEGIT info from people who DO the things that I'd like to do...
Was the yoke on the 14 bolt that you got a 1350 or the 1310? Did it come out of an SS silverado? I found a guy who has one locally that has 3.73's in it just like my stock one....I was thinking about buying it....but I'd like to get a good game plan first...I don't like to just randomly buy stuff just because its a good deal....doing that is why a few of my friends have miniature JEEP junk yards in their back yards...LOL...

1350 joints all the way.Had to have my driveshaft rebuilt with 1350 yokes since I had an 80e in there, too.

If you use some decent gears, upgraded axles, and a Detroit Truetrac for the LSD, you can stick with a 10 bolt. People don't give 10 bolts any credit. They are decent if built correctly.
A 1500HD 14 will come with 8 lugs--and you don't want that. SOME VHO trucks have the 14 bolt rear along with all the RWD SSS trucks.

Did the silverado SS trucks have 1350 yokes on BOTH sides of the driveline, or just one side? I KNOW that they didnt come with 80's...but maybe on the tranny side of the driveshaft its a 1350 with a 1310 on the other side of the u-joint and a yoke for the 65/70 trannys...If they have them on both side I can just chop one of those shorter and have to do a little less work with the driveshaft place........then get a new slip joint from the wrecking yard and have them chop the whole thing to what ever length is needed.....what do you guys think? Is that even worth the trouble?
No, the 2WD SSS trucks did not come with 1350 yokes. You could easily drop in a 6 lug 14 bolt in place without any driveline issues. The only thing you may have to screw with are the brakes or leaf spring perches.
BUT--if it was me, I would go with the 80e with a beefier 10 bolt. I would definitely go with a new LSD over the stock G80. The upgraded axles don't need to happen until you start throwing 650+ RWHP at it... Some people are also weary of running a 10 bolt it the drum brakes--but c-clip eliminators are the fix for that.
