I've thought about the same thing. All the LT1 vs. LS1 talk, really even my friend who is a mechanic at a Chevy dealership says all the same stuff: LS1 is hands down better.
1996 GMC Sierra RCSB
4.3L V6 - 4L60E - 15" stock aluminums - 3.42s - slow weekend warrior
2004 Chevy Tahoe LT
5.3L V8 - 4L60E - 17" stock aluminums - 3.73s - less slow daily driver
Depends on how deep your pockets are. If youv'e got the LT1 there are plenty of LT1/LS1 RESOURCES out there to help with the swap. It sounds like your leaning towards the Gen II BASE. Do you have the obd I pcm?

2000 Suburban 4X4 LT 5.3
MOOG Problem solver BJ's, All 4
Frozen windshield wash reservoir Mod
1995 Caprice B4U, Imp SS 17's
1995 Caprice 9C1 (Toms9C1) Fred Flintstone Mod
1994 Caprice 9C1 (Jrs9C1)
The LT1 will require wiring harness mods and a different computer like the LS based engine. The trans is the same either way basically.
Don't waste money on an LT1. Old and dead technology. Optispark sucks ass. Throw a 6.0 and 4L80E at it and hang on.
i had a big cuge LT1. def go ls1 you will thank me later. esp when you want to go EVEN FASTER!
2005 GMC RST *sold
2006 Silverado SS with nawz
deff go with the ls based stuff. you have to put in perspective how old lt1 technology really is i mean look at how old that motor is, it first appeared in 92 thats 17 years old! that motor is older than some people on this forum! and that technology from the early 90's is really just the type of fuel injection and ignition. Not to mention ls was originaly designed just for racing (C5R) Ls1 for the win!
74 Austin Morris Mini 1000 - Daily Coil Spring conversion, lowered, Disc Brake conversion
FOR SALE: 04 RC/LB Duramax -12 second tow pig, built Allison, Tune, and supporting mods
FOR SALE: 03 Silverado SS -DBRods built 40X, DP, Suspension. Going for fast
This lt1 conversion section is useless since all you guys just tell people to go ls base.
Pretty much.
We suggest they go LSx based. We'll still help them out if they choose to go old school. Bad thing about a LT1 in a 96 is you only have two years of engines to do a 48 state legal swap if you go LT1.
