Advice Requested, Truck Problem

I already talked to Cody, Virgil, and Tyler. I just want to see if anyone else has an Idea.


Last night I was driving home. I stopped at the shop and went inside. When I can out I noticed that the truck was making a weird pinging noice coming from the motor, I listened and it didnt stop. I got in the truck and Oil pressure had dropped to 18psi (had it set on my aeroforce). I drove to the gas station and at constant RPMs the oil pressure would surge between 30-55 or so. It kept doing that. I got home and the pinging had stopped but the pressure was still down at aroun 18 psi.

I got advice last night that it could possible be a Spun Rod Bearing, Cam Bearing going out, or Oil Pump about to go.

Now this morning


This morning I got in my truck and started it up and it was 34psi, perfect right? I drove to the gas station then to work, once I got to work (5 miles from the house) it started surging and then when I pulled into the shop it dropped down to 19 psi.

Any Ideas please? And is it safe to drive it like this?

A guy in the shop said maybe the sending unit?

I would not call it safe. Check the wiring from the oil pressure sensor for chafing and replace the sensor. If it continues doing that I would invest in a new oil pump, sounds like the oil pump pressure regulator piston plunger is sticking.

Yes the oil level is normal. I am changing the oil today. And dont laugh, but where is the oil pressure sensor so I can check its wires?

oil pressure sending unit is at the back of the block...you may have to pull the intake to get to it...at least it makes it a whole lot easier....oil pump is just like a cam swap and no you dont have to drop the pan like i had thought, just a couple bolts and it comes off

I guess I will check the draim plug for shavings first, Will do that today. And I will let yall know if there are any.

My personal .02.... i would put a mechanical oil pressure gauge on it. That would eliminate all wires, sensors etc. then you know exactly what its doing. You can get a little cheapy at the local auto parts store for like 10 bucks..

The gauge acts exactly like that when the sender is bad buy that does not explain any engine noise.

Use a machanical gauge as suggested above.

Thats weird, I have an autometer oil gauge w. sending unit in my garage that is new.
