Just trying to get orientated with this site and all the help that seems to abound here.
    I have a 90' Chevy 2500 with a HD turbo 400 tranny. This vehicle has a 350 with a throttle body.
This truck also has over 300,000 miles on it. Runs great...rear main leaks...gets 11 mpg on avg.
What I need to know is what engine to replace it with, what computer, and I would really like to
keep the 400 tranny. I do a little pulling of motorcycle trailers, and sometimes a 32' travel trailer.
I work all over the place as you have probably guessed, and am looking for gas savings, but still would like to have the pulling power, and power when just messing around. My son, who is a Camaro fanatic, has suggested that I locate a motor and computer from a wrecked late model 2500 HD truck and install that instead of a 345 hp vortec crate motor that I can pick up cheap.........help an old fart make a decision

I would go for the 5.3L or 6.0L conversion for better performance and mileage. In a 90 model, many states go by CARB regulations and require you to install only engines available in production vehicles in 90 and newer vehicles and you must still pass all emissions testing of the 90 model vehicle. You should be getting about 18 MPG with the 5.3 and maybe 16 MPG with the 6.0L in your setup.

welcome...6.0's are the motors in the late model 3/4 tons but if your not towing every day then i would go with a 5.3 cause the 5.3 gets alot better mpg.austin at hiway auto is a sponsor on this site and he has 6.0 and 5.3 total pullouts for good prices...hit him up for a price if you want to go this route....

welcome id do the 5.3 also , great power and mileage, your not going to get the best milage with that turbo 400, get an overdrive tranny to take full advantage of these newer fuel injected motors. also get a good tune and air intake and exhaust mods will get you 1-2 better mpg.

If I go with the 5.3, should I lose the TBI and install the vortec injection and computer?
