Thread: will a ls1 conversion run without computer tune?

    ive got a 98 f-body ls1 with a street and performance wiring harness. Just wondering if I can even start the engine without having the computer retuned?

    VATS might be the only problem. If it has it the engine will run for 2 seconds then shut off.

    You'll definitely need to have the VATS disabled.

    so id have to have it sent in to at least have vats removed?

    That or find someone local to you with HPTuners for the same year f-body car as yours and talk them into disabiling it for you for a case of beer or something.

    well thats not going to happen around here. I guess ill have to send it in...how much for just a vats disable? Or should I just have the custom tune done at the same time?

    You'll want to get all your changes done in one trip if you can. The stock tune is pretty good but you'll need to reprogram for new gears, tire sizes, remove rear O2 sensors, AIR control, EGR, remove VATS and turn off all the unnecessary warning lights you'll encounter because you've disabled or removed the item. I'm not sure what your plans are but those are a few things I had done to mine to get it to run without tripping the SES light.

    yea i guess i better get it all done at once....whats allen charge for a tune? Any way to get discounts?

    You'll have to call him and find out or just email him and wait for a reply. You'll probably have to be patient and wait your turn in line. He's very reasonable on a basic tune to disable all the crap to get you going. Now if you want a performance tune it will be a bit more. He's gotten pretty good at these F-body LS1s lately, plenty of practice.
