take the pan all the way off, remove the oil pickup tube, remove the windage tray and fish the lifter out. You need a new oring for the oil pickup tube. Put a small bead of silicone around the pickup tube oring on the side opposite the oil pump when reinstalling it.

really, it seems to hit the trans housing and i worried about damaging somthing, i did pull the crossmember but i really dont want to break something else, its a 4x4 if that makes a difference. is there a certain way to move the pan so i can get it out.

It should drop straight down. You did remove the two bolts at the bottom of the transmission that holds it to the pan, right?

its not that easy, there are all kinds of wires and bolts holding it on there. i just need to know if i can get the pan over that axel so i can get the pan out.
