    oil starvation

Hi all, new to this site I have been coming back here looking for info for the past few days, so thought I might as well become a member.

I have a 05 with 5.3 and a couple of days before xmas it lost oil pressure all of a sudden! No warning no problems ever. I have the engine out torn down and block, crank, and rods at the machine shop. When I took the oil pan of the number 2 and 3 mains were dry as well as the 1/2 rod journal. The engine never made a sound. No lifter noise, no knock. there is about 120 000 KM/70 000 miles on the truck. I cannot find any service bullitins on an oiling issue or anything on the net. Has anyone here ever seen something like this? Sure would like to put my finger on something and say there was the problem! I will be replacing the oil pump as well when it goes back together. Also considering a cam swap as well seeing as its apart.

thanks for any info that can be provided.

Most often it is a stuck oil pressure relief valve in the oil pump that causes that issue.

Have all components of rotating assembly checked and double checked. Bolt it all back up and throw in a decent cam for that 5.3L--like the TR220. Replace oil pump and make sure the o-ring on pickup tube is on correctly.

If it was me, I would have shut off the engine right when the oil pressure went to ZERO. Then I would have hooked up a mechanical gauge and started the motor back up to see what the verdict is... More often than not, the oil pressure sending unit may have gone South on ya. I would have done some more troubleshooting before tearing the whole thing apart...

thanks for the replys. I was hopping to hear that someone else had a similar problem.

It had no oil pressure. What baffled me was there was no lifter noise, no knocking when restarted a handful of times. So out it came. The pressure relief valve and oil pump look fine. It will have a new pump anyway. Pick up and o-ring where fine. I guess if its a strange problem I'd have it. Oh well it will be fresh and I may just add a cam for some extra performance because I'm this close to it now!

    Thanks

Mark, like i was saying, it very well could be your oil pressure sending unit. It is behind the intake... You need a special socket to get it off.

What size cams you thinking about?

Tr220 would be a good Off the shelf cam for you.....if you wanna do a small stall.

Sorry I should have said that was checked with a mechanical gauge. I've turned wrenches for 20 years it had squat.

Looked at the tr220 cam the "old man cam" didn't really want to put a stall in it. Have looked at the specs for a few comp cams as well. I work at a performance shop so I can get comp through 1 of our suppliers. Being in Canada to order through TR would get nailed with duty and blah blah. This truck is my daily transportation, but the kid in me says power!! I should just make as much power as I can, converter, cam the works. We have a new dyno in house that I'm free to use, just a little software.

Ah, gotchya...I was wondering why you didn't say anything.

Dude, if you are at a shop, installing a converter should be cake! If you want power, then buy a cam that will MAKE you put a converter in it. And since you are at a "Hemi House," you need to mod up that truck of yours and show them Dodge boys how it's done.
