    Ecm

I was wondering if a 4.8L ECM could be retuned for a 5.3L Engine. Just wondering because I know a kid who selling one, but he doesn't know the tune any longer. He said it is either for a stock 4.8 or for a supercharged 4.8. Will Nelson Tuning be able to work with it, because I want to send it out so he can just pre-program it for my upgrades. Any info helps. Thanks.

yeah, it will be programmable if it is the correct PCM for your vehicle. Be sure to compare the last three digits of yours to the one you're considering buying. Normal procedure is you order one, he has a PCM in stock and puts your base tune in it and then makes the updates, boxes it up and sends it to you, you swap his for your's, you drive it a few days to be sure all is well and you're happy, you box your original PCM and send it back to him for core credit. He will sell you a PCM if that is what you wish. Might be good if you have warranty work done to swap back to the factory PCM so they don't reflash your tuned PCM while its there for work.

If it's been tuned before it might be locked by the tuner.

He told me he was running an HP tuner. Will that make a difference?

As long as it's not locked and flashable, it's usable.
As long as it's the correct PN for your truck, it can be flashed with your vin and calibration.

I thought any PCM that was locked could be rewritten with a TechII.

No, we get them once in a while and they are useless.
The TechII and our current system will fail each time.

Once a pcm is locked, there is no way of unlocking it, at with the tools I have.

I thought you just had to reload the original factory tune back in it, overwriting any past tunes, kind of like wiping the operating system off a PC and reloading a new one back on. Hmmmm...

I don't know how hptuners locks them, but it's like they scramble the first part of the calibration or something. The only thing the tools can do is identify it and run diags/scans.
It's like the techII sees a corrupt pcm and fails on initial flashing.
