    Truck won't start!

I know you guys can give me some ideas here . I have a 98 LS1 in my 94 half ton . Last week the truck hinted at this problem but gave me a break and started and has run fine since . I had just turned it off when suddenly the line I was in moved and I had to restart her . It would turn over but wouldn't start for about 15 seconds and then started . It's been a bout week until now . I went out and she does nothing but turn over and I can't hear the fuel pump coming on so I know sort of where the problem is . I went through fuel pump problems shortly after the conversion about 2 1/2 years ago and Greg helped me out then . I replaced the fuel pump (from NAPA) and it's been fine since . Could it be a wiring issue since it's been sort of intermittent ? If the fuel pump were faulty wouldn't it just have died last week when this began? I looked for a fuse and couldn't find one for the fuel pump in the fuse block . I've never been good at solving electrical problems so any input is appreciated . Damn , I don't want to drop that tank again ! I've had it out twice ! I guess I can't complain too much when she dies in the driveway though, can I ? Happy Holidays , Jim

Check the relay. Try 12v directly to the grey wire going to the fuel pump and see if you get pressure. If yes, maybe bad relay or broke wire. If no, bad ground, broken wire or pump died or maybe your hose rotted out the tube joining the pump to the fuel line.

Thanks for those ideas guys . This truck has been running so well ever since the swap that I get rusty at troubleshooting which I've never been too good at anyways . I replaced the relay since they're so cheap and still nothing - also checked the fuse and it's ok . I unplugged the fuel pump and checked the voltage . From the purple wire in the middle of the plug to the gray wire I get 8.2 volts and from the purple to the black with white stripe I get 8.5 - nothing from gray to black / white wire . Should I be getting 12 volts across any of these ? Also unplugged the fuse and got no reading - ignition key on of course . Shouldn't that read 12 volts or at least something other than zero? Greg , could you please come down here to babysit me and my truck ? (sniff , sniff ) How much would it cost to go to an out of tank pump ?
    Thanks again for your time

did those ls1 engines have VATS? if so might look into getting that fixed. also check MAF sensor and fuel filter.

Eh, go ahead and get a new in-tank setup. If dropping the tank is a biatch, just call a friend over and help you lift off your bed. Taking the bed off is wayyyy easier. 8 bolts, unplug a few wires, and viola!!!! Easy as pie.

Hell , I hadn't thought about that idea . How much do the shortbeds weigh , anyone ? I' ll ask again but I don't think anyone is reading this thread anymore much - which Walbro external pump would I use and how much more of a pita is this going to be to setup ? Would I still have to remove the pump in the tank ? Assuming yes here .

vff jeff said check the VATS and the MAF - how would this affect the fuel pump ? THANKS !

well ive had my bed off i think 5 or 6 times now... you can do it with 2 guys but its hard... 4 guys is easy or if you have an engine hoist.. i used that a couple times by myself with 4 tow straps.. takes a little manuvering but it comes off. the worst part is getting the front of the beds fender over the rear tire cuz it has to be lifted pretty high... hope that helps it is pretty easy though mines off right now lol..

Or don't be a big douche and just you and a friend lift it off... They aren't that heavy. Maybe I could ask my Grandma to come over and help you lift it off...

Vehicle Anti theft system.VATS I thought it might be why engine would not start, but if youve pinpointed the fuel pump, have fun. Oh yeah take the bed off, id say 250lbs give or take. I did it both ways, on a truck like yours, and bed off is alot easier. just make sure you line it up right or it will look goofy.
