Ok....I have got to pull the starter to get to the crank sensor and check it out. Anyone have any tips or tricks to do the job? Special tools required? If I pull it, do any parts need to be replaced in the process; shims, spacers, etc? I'm assuming that if I replaced it I'll need to do a CASE learn afterwards?

Nothing special I know of, just a 15mm socket, extension and ratchet required.

I believe it is just 2 bolts, on the back right of the motor front of tranny. Just be sure you get the teeth lined up right when you reistall it.
