Hey guys posted here a while back about an ls1 swap into a 96 Chevy pickup 2 wheel drive. Here recently my work load has been pretty slow so been looking around and im thinking of going with a LQ9 instead of the Ls1. What did the LQ9 come in with the 4l65 behind it. Also is this transmission a direct swap as my 4l60. Thanks guys

You can use any transmission behind the LQ9 which came out in the Escalades the most. You can put the 4L60e, 4L65e or 4L80e behind it with the right pcm and wiring.

The 4L60E mounts up, but the housing is not exactly the same. You will have 2 gaps in the housing, one toward the bottom left siad and one toward the bottom right side. but those can be filled in.

If you get an LQ9/LQ4, you can put any of the 4L series transmissions behind it. Crankshaft spacers may be needed on older transmission. They can be bought at GM or Street and Performance.

Let me revise this. Any 4L transmission from a 4.3L or larger will work. The 4L transmission in a 3.8 has a different bolt pattern and bell housing configuration. You can also put a 700R4, turbo 350 and 400 behind a Gen3 engine if it came out of a gas 4.3L engine or larger. No diesel transmissions swap except the old ones from the gas/diesel conversion engines from vehicles like the 1982 Olds 88.

They bolt up right, but the housing is exactly the same on the trannys. We ran into that on out swap with the 4L60E and LQ4. But they will all work.

Somewhere mid 2000 and below the 6.0's had a longer cranshaft. They will not work with the 4L60 and variants. Must use the 4l80E.

After mid 2000 they have the short crankshaft. To run the 4l80e you must install a spacer. No spacer required to run the 4L60.

I was talking with Billy and Dustin at TRTTurbo and Billy says that the longer crankshaft is really just a spacer that you can knock off the end of the crank with punch. I haven't seen it myself since I haven't worked on any 6.0L shortblocks but you know he has.

Okay guys,
What about the ECM hard ware to run the LQ4/9?
Would it be needed, or not?
I'm asking because the same swap is of interest to me upon my return from this deployment.

Nelson can hook you up with everything you need. Or just get a complete motor, PCM and all.

Has anybody done the swap and used the factory gauges in the 96 and up trucks?
