I have heard in the past that if your trans oil is not changed regularly (every 30,000) or so you take the risk of it failling when you do change it. myth: If you haven't changed it in 50,000 don't it will cause it to drop out.

Has anybody had any experience with this?

thanks

That's been my luck. I think the seals get lazy when the fluid pressure falls off because of a dirty filter. Once a nice clean free flowing filter is in place, too much pressure blows the seals internally. That's just my opinion. I'd change the fluid more often than 30k. I'd put a drain plug in the pan and change it about every 10K just to keep good clean fluid in place.

Tranny fluid breaks down with heat and we have pleanty of that with the climate and heavy trucks. I change mine once a year about 10K miles. This is cheap maintenance for what a transmission cost.

No expert here but I think that's kind of true. I think most people neglect their tranny until it starts to have trouble & then they want to change the fluid like that is going to miraculously cure the problem. By that time it's too late & by changing it or flushing it they are just stirring a bucket of shit so to speak.

That is why I am asking mine had 67k when I got and now I have 106K and I think it would go badly if I change it now.

Thanks guys

I personally don't believe in this myth. I bought my 93 chevy truck with 87,000 miles on it with the original trans fluid in it. I changed it first thing and now change it every 20,000 miles. this trans now has 184,000 miles and is still strong. it is a bone stock 4L60E. i don't do a real lot of towing but I do a lot a of hauling.

I have heard and seen it happen.I have drain plugs in my pans in my Tahoe and truck and I pull the plug every oil change and I change my oil no more than 3000miles.Most of the time I change it earlier.I drop the pan and change the filter every 8000miles or so also.
I change my fluids way to aften I know yes,but I do not care as it is cheap insurance IMO.

Well i bought my truck with 50K on it back in august of '05 and i don't know if it had ever been serviced. It looked, "smelled" fine though. I changed it out and put a new filter in it after i did the turbo and the shift kit. My tranny shelled about 1000 miles later. Could have been the boost though

As for me i do a transmission service every 15000 miles, I drive alot and also pull a trailer alot as of so far the only time that i have had work done to the transmission was for the servo and shift kit i had installed the guy told me it looks brand new. My truck now has almost 100,000 on it. Hope this helps, as for my father he has a ford never changed the fluid and it is no longer red it is black it has 160,000 i was told not to change it, it would do more harm than good and his shifts like it is still new so i have no ideal how or even why. lol.
Work in progress.........
