I go straight for the 36 grit since its going to have filler primer laid down later to remove all surface imperfections.

I'm going to hit it with primer but I dont have the money for paint right now so it'll have to be done all over again.... Should I use an electric or air sander? I hear that even a large compressor wont keep up with a sander, is this true?

raw primer attracts moisture. If you don't get it in paint quickly you'll have rust under the topcoat and your finish won't last. Don't do the work until you can finish paint it within a reasonable amount of time after grinding to bare metal.
