    T56 Swap

OK, so i lost my stick shift virginity today, and after that I REALLY want a manual trans. FLT has the T56 for $2150, and i really need a new trans right now anyways, cause im havin major issues after tearin mine up. now what all would need to be done for a swap. and i also heard that the gears had to be changed to 4.10s? is this true? I need to know EVERYTHING about a T56 swap, im a totally ignorant newb at trannys.

All your mandatory stick shift stuff from a 5speed truck, and theres a couple ways to do the wiring, leave it the way it is and use the auto switch to tell the PCM the tranny is in park, or do what I'm doing and do a nice clean conversion to a 5speed harness.

you need to run a lower gear because the T56 ratios are meant for the lighter fbody

Here's my deal, keep in mind I'm using a 2005 harness

There's also a massive thread on pt.net where George pretty much figured out the proper way to do the wiring

It was funny AND you think a lot. Thinking is cool, though.

ISNT YOUR TRUCK 4X4? Gonna be hard to do a 6 speed swap.

I went from the stock T-5 5-speed to a close-ratio T-56 in my Mustang. One of the best things I ever did to that car. I highly recommend it.

My only complaint with the T-56 (at least the one in my car) is that Reverse is far to the right and up, and pretty tight. My right shoulder is FUBAR from work (need surgery eventually), so I have to release my safety harness and use 2 hands to hit Reverse. Get a good aftermarket shifter if one is available for trucks, it makes a world of difference. I had a Pro-5.0 (probably Mustang-only company) shifter on the T-5 and went with the same one for the T-56. The 2-3 shift is a breeze, I just hit the shifter with the heel of my palm at about a 30-degree angle and it goes in like magic. Anyone who misses the 2-3 upshift with a shifter like that should have their license revoked

HP Motorsports did the conversion for me. They were actually developing a bolt-in crossmember kit for the conversion at the time, so I gave them my car and the transmission to prototype with. Free labor, oh yeah!

Biggest thing I remember is the driveshaft had to be shortened 1 1/2" (versus a T-5). SFI scattershields weren't available at the time, so I went with a blanket. I don't know if they're available now, but if they are, I'd get one. I also went with a SFI Centerforce clutch and ARP bolts. The clutch feels good, not too heavy in stop-and-go traffic. Oh yeah, I also got an adjustable clutch quadrant.
