I'm looking at a cam swap in the future for my 99 silverado. I am also considering a tune, but I'm thinking I might as well do the cam first and then have it tuned.

The comp cams XR265HR cam.... Is it a good choice? I want a cam to really give me some gains.... so am I looking at significant rear wheel gains with this cam?

Anyone have 1st person experience with this one?

    Thanks,
    Derek

Popular Hot Rodding did a three cam comparison on a near stock LS1. They tested COMP cam's XR265HR, XR275HR and the XR281HR. Output was as follows.....

    Stock LS1
    407 HP @ 5500 rpm
    375+ lbs-ft @ 4800 rpm

    XR265HR
    439 HP @ 6000 rpm
    426 lbs-ft @ 4800 rpm

    XR275HR
    450 HP @ 6500 rpm
    422 lbs-ft @ 5000 rpm

    XR281HR
    455 HP @ 6200 rpm
    421 lb-ft @ 5000 rpm

All this was on a motor with no accessories, running an electric water pump, Comp cams 918 springs, AccuFab billet throttle body, Wilson billet fuel rails, Hooker long tube headers, Pro-M mass air meter and meziere electric water pump. They thought the engine needed better breathing for the 281 cam. All testing was done without changing the PCM basic programming.

    Hmmm.

Those are great results for the cam I'm looking at. I think the 265 will be the most streetable "hot cam" for me.

In the professional opinion of you engine wizzes, will the 265 cam wake up my 5.3L the same way it did the ls1?

Their suggestion is to go with the 275 cam unless you plan on doing additional mods on an LS1. I will most likely go with the 281 since I always go overboard on everything and my truck has the LS1.

Nothing missing. Stock internals, billet throttle body, removed hp robbing accessories, replaced hp robbing water pump with electric water pump, changed the fuel rails to a Wilson flow thru type from of all things a 5.0 mustang to keep the fuel cool, the air intake was a K&N conical filter through a straight rubber hose into the MAF instead of any twists and turns. Stock fuel injectors were used and the stock programming. Exhaust was through a pair of hooker 1-3/4" long tube headers through dual 3" flowmaster dyno mufflers. The engine they used was a crate engine Westech had in their warehouse directly from GM so nothing out of the ordinary could have been snuck into the engine to alter the test results.
