will a tune fix this for me....allen?

So...when Excatly Does It Run Lean? - TrailBlazerSS.com | Chevrolet TrailBlazer SS Forum |
this thread has me thinking. when i get a tune are the cats turned off or is the computer fooled into thinking the temps are fine? because today i did a wot run in the sub, with my buddy behind me in a MUCH faster car and he said i kicked out a decent puff of black smoke when i punched it. does that mean i could go a little leaner and grab a few more horses. i bet everyones gonna say put a WBo2 on it and see. so i guess thats what I'll do. but i still wonder about the computer looking at the cat temps and dumping in fuel. although i did pick up 2 solid mpg after me nelson NA tune on the sub. thats enough to get a nelson tune on the TBSS.

I blew some black smoke on the dyno and the guys there said it was probably detonation.

There can be several things going on that can attribute to the puff of black smoke... How many miles on the Sub? Has it only done this since turning it back to NA? It shouldn't be carbon build up since you were FI on that motor (and you ran it through the paces pretty well). Typically FI motors don't get the opportunity to have carbon deposits... How are your seals, rings, etc? Try and see what a WBO2 will read... It can be detonation like Red said, or it can be that there is too much fuel being dumped in at WOT... It's tought to delegate the symptoms...too bad that you aren't close enough to Allen to have him do a live tune for ya.

I'd install a wide band like mentioned above or scan your narrowbands to see what's happening. You can't tell whats going on without a good scan log.
