Thread: overheating, need help!

1. #1
iv been out of service now for two moths with my 99 silverado...waiting for parts for my cam swap. i swapped in an ls1 hot cam into my gen III 5.3 and it started up first crank! now I have a bigger problem, overheating. i already swapped my thermostat and that wasn't the problem. i heard something about air in the radiator maybe? im guessing its a coolant problem because the fan is moving fine. anyways, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! thanks.

Air is a bad thing in your coolant system. Try having it flushed or here is what i did. I just squeezed all the hoses until i did not see my soolant level drop any more. Some one else may have another idea but that is just what i did.

Take the upper rad hose off on the rad end and then pour coolant down the hose as you hold it up in the air. Simple fix.

Do what Red said, but if that still doesn't work, try replacing all the hoses directly related to the coolant system. There may be a hairline fracture or crack in a hose letting the air in on the top of the hose. Do you see any coolant leaking anywhere? Or is it low on coolant? Are you using the recommended Dex-cool (orange colored) coolant?

I like to drill two small (1/8")holes in the stat flang to alow air to purg out during the initial fill.

I also remove the air bleed hose from the heads while filling. Once the coolant runs out the air bleeds without air bubbles I call it good and put the air bleed hose back on and re-attach the rad hose and then continue filling the rad up to full.
