Thread: Long Tube Headers

    I was looking at some long tubes at Summit (for the stock 350) for my '93 silverado, but obvously none of them have a place for the O2 sensor. Anybody know how I could retain it if I got long tubes? (Tryin to stay emissions legal)

    I have bought and welded O2 bungs to header collectors before; drill a hole in the collector (so the O2 sensor will pass through) and then simply position & mig the bung onto there and viola instant O2 sensor mount I am also sure an exhaust shop would do it for you for super cheap, it's like a 5-10 minute job.

    awesome man thanks so much! Didn;t think of that. If I have coated headers will I be able to weld to that surface with a regular mig? (thats what I have) Also, is there a particular spot on the collector I should do it.

    The coating will have to be ground off, exposing the parent metal or the ceramic will foul the weld but given the application I doubt it would pose a problem. But I would grind a spot clear for the O2 bung. Most people install the O2 sensor a couple inches after the primary tubes join together, to get an average O2 reading of all four cylinders plus it usually works out to be the most convenient place to install it.

    cool, got the 02 sensor worked out, but i noticed the alternator bracket is bolted to the manifold. Will I be able to bolt it over the headers the same way? If so, I have no idea where I could buy that crazy bolt that holds it on...

    There's a special bracket made for that purpose. Look on their website for one. You may have to put the manufacturer's name and alt in the search engine to find it and then sort through the part numbers.

    Found it at summit for $8. Thank you guys so much, yall saved me some major headaches. Ill post some videos of how it sounds when I get em put on

    O yea, do you guys think its worth the extra $100 or so to get the ceramic coated headers as far as durability goes?

    For &#036;100 yes I would do it; raw mild steel tubing will be rotted away within 4-5 years.
