As the saying go there is no replacement for displacement. For a serious and reliable package I would pass on the LSx/LQx based engine and go for at least a 620 hp 572 crate engine or if you don't mind buying nothing but the best fuel go with the 720 hp GM 572 or one from any of the larger builders. Once you have to start adding the boost you start to kill the reliability of the engine. If you consider a base engine, a forged bottom end, turbo assembly, a built transmission and all the parts that will be required to install the engine you will probably be at about $15,000 especially if you have to pay someone to do all the work.

6.0L and STS 5psi got Allen in the 11's. If you want to go cheap and turbo then you can always go w/ a 5.3L STS turbo or custom front mount turbo. I think a 5.3L some stock 6.0L heads and a turbo cam will get you in the 11,s. Your biggest problem will be traction. If you can hook I think it will be very fast.

A motor built like this will be very comfortable to drive.

Are you wanting to spend the money on a built bottom end?

i know allen was in the 11's with that setup...i was racing him on that pass ....it really looks like that would be the ideal setup for that little truck specially when your driving behind the ole farmtruk and watching it fish tail like crazy at around 70mph

Red's right, get a 572 in the and run 10's probably, have a great reliable engine, but you'll get 8mpg haha, not ideal if you want to drive it around. but...
I know you're stuck on boost Bud hahah, and I'm sure that's the way you're going to go.
Get a stout 6L and boost it, that'll get you in the 11's, no problem. I ran this on the stock suspension, stock 6L, and 5-6psi, and slicks.
I never got it to the track without the trans slipping, on 10psi, but I'm sure it would have dropped .5 tenths easily, it felt strong.

So, what I would do if I was trying to stay within the limits, get a rebuildable 6L, no need to have it running, forge it, no need to go with fancy stroking, but it won't hurt either, stock 6L heads, custom front mount turbo, good fuel system, ladder bars, built trans-i think the 60e is pushing it, maybe an 80e or TH400, and you'll be haulin ass in no time.

    get it going! we're waiting,

6 litre, big cam, big stall (3000 and up), and some sticky tires, with 4.10 gears. Hell If v8 can get his in the 12's w/ a 5.3 why can't you get a lighter truck w/ a bigger motor in the low 12's or possibly 11's. Go naturally aspirated for a change the power is always there no matter if you smoke a compressor bearing, blow a hose off, to high of intake temps, etc...

High compression 408 with an aggressive cam, steep gears, built heads, high stall, that'll get you in the solid 11's.

just trying to come up with some options for you, but I think you'll go with boost,

Alton, you know there is nothing like boost. You can have a smooth daily driver that gets good mpg and runs 11's in the same truck.
I just took an iron block 5.3 to the machine shop with no-ones name on it. It will be bored out to 3.90 (347ci), Eagle rods, ARP rod bolts, Mahle forged pistons, balanced, line bored, polished crank, about 9:1 compression. That would be a great start. We can get you some 6.0 heads and have a little work done to them and your long block would be done. Remember, we made 650 in a Yukon with a bored 5.3, GT-67 STS and LS6 cam.
We could even grab some 6.0 exhaust manifolds and do a single front mount.
