I hope Im not out of line asking this on Allans site. To be honest I saved some money and went with a mail order tune from someone else. Now I have a 6l swap with a cam. I'm having some problems with idle surge. I also am interested in doing my own logging/tuning. I know Allen knows the answer *crosses fingers*. Suposedly when I got my PCM, it was suposed to be an '02. Is there any way to tell for sure, and more importantly, I plan to get HPtuners. My truck is a 2000 model, but if the PCM is from a 2002, do I need HPT for a 2000, or a 2002?

    Thanks

You'll need it for the 2002. Check out LS1Tech.com's HPTuner section. There are a lot of guys in there that will help teach you how to use the new software. I'd go back to who you bought the PCM tune from and have him fix what he broke. They have got to learn to do it right the first time or eat the cost of sending you another one to make it right, gratis. I wouldn't let up until you got what you paid for.

If your not sure if its really an 02 pcm. I would take it to a shop that has a decent scan tool to pull the Vin, as you know 01-02 are the same but if its a 01 pcm and you get support for 02 with HPT your going to be screwed.

Not at all, I encourage a bit of competition

Read the pcm and check the vin, that usually will tell you what year it is, the 10th digit.
If you have an idle surge, check the idle rpm and idle tables, that should smooth it out.

    good luck,

With all due respect towards Allan. I think it would be very hard to get an idle surge perfectly worked out with a custom cam. If I had got the TR224 it probably wouldnt be too hard, but I got a custom grind from Cammotion.

As far as the vin, wouldnt the PCM have my vin in it? I thought you would re-flash the vin to the new PCM.

Ya, the pcm will definitely have the vin. The pcm service number should also be a 411.
When you get hpt, perform a Get VCM Id and that will show you what kind of calibration is loaded in the pcm.

Nope your vin is not in it. They are a different OS your Vin wont take. Its a good thing in your case.

Horist, on LS1Tech, had software to over write the VIN when tuning but the VIN is your way back to momma if something ever goes wrong. The VIN in the PCM gets your basic tune and updates should they be necessary from GM. You want the VIN that is in the PCM to be updated, not the original VIN associated to your truck. If you ever take it to GM for service, be sure you tape over the diagnostic port and put a note on it not to reflash your PCM. They may think they're doing you a favor and update your flash to the latest release.

Should be on a sticker on the PCM. Last 4 numbers should be 0411.
