i'm wanting to clean up my block a bit and the paint that is on the block looks to be pretty tough. its all caked on with other normal crap, what can i use to get it off without hurting or erroding the aluminum pan and sensors? and what will be safe to use on the heads to get them cleaned up? thanks!
Brake parts cleaner will get all the gunk off. My block was recently hot tanked and the paint is still there. Not sure what you should use to get it off.
the blocks are powder coated and short of baking it off or blasting it's not coming off.

Good to know. I'll just be painting over it! I'm wayyyyyy to lazy to try and get it off.
well that sucks cuz its all peeling off and looks like shit, i wonder if a wire brush on a 4 in grinder would help get it all off. its flaking off by hand now around all the edges.Originally Posted by RedHeartbeat

if it is flaking off try some aviation paint stripper on it to get it all off but be sure to neutralize the hell out of the surface before trying to paint it. Baking soda and water mixture will help neutralize it. I've heard some guys use oven cleaner on the aluminum but be sure there isn't ammonia in it since it does a number on aluminum.

Not sure if I should have used it, but I used brake cleaner on all my aluminum. Didn't seem to hurt is and if got a lot of the shit off.
Oh yeah, its some great stuff, carb or brake cleaner. Be sure you use a lot of ventilation or you'll end up half brain dead like me.

i used a 3m abrasive wheel on a drill and it cleaned the block very well. it sorta looks like a funnel cake. the wheel wears fast but is made to strip paint/etc off

Mmmmmmm, I effing love funnel cake!!!! I might try the wheel. I had one in my hand the other day at Walmart then I decided against it.
