    4l60e (performabuilt) trans pan leaking

i just got my level 2 performabuilt in last night...it drove great down the road i love how it shifts and locks. so i got home from my shop and checked underneath and found that the pan was soaked in fluid. checked everything out realy well this morning and figured it was either the pan gasket or the seal for the shifter linkage. i stopped by local trans builder he give me a new gasket (black paper type) and a shifter shaft seal. i figured id try the pan gasket first. i popped it down and removed the cork style gasket that was on there, and put on the one i was givin. i torqued to 12ft lbs as local builder said and it is weaping as well. someone recommended using silver silicone as thats what most chrysler trans use. does anyone have any other possible ideas? thanks

paper gasket is useless, the cork would have worked better. nothing wrong with using heat resistant silicone of applied properly

why not use the factory gasket? It's plastic with a seal embossed on both sides. While you have the pan off, if any of the bolt holes are protruding lower than the flat section of the pan then take a smooth faced hammer and flatten them back out.

thanks Greg, as i foregot about the OEM gasket lol!

i've used a cork gasket with a very thin layer of red rtv, the silver works damn good also, as i use it without a gasket on my rearend cover

The oem fiber gaskets work well. One thing I want to add here is the pan torque spec's are 98-108 inlbs. I normally set my inch lb torque wrench to 110 and let it fly. At 12 ftlbs you are at 144inlbs. That is way to much for any pan gasket on this transmission. As mentioned above make sure the pan is good and flat around the bolt holes. I never use silcone on these units and nevre have issues with leaky pans for what its worth. HTH Vince
